Chapter 7

Hannah searched the ballroom for Ramsbury. Seth had commented that he would be in attendance, and yet, he was nowhere to be found. For that matter, Seth was amiss as well. Perhaps the two of them squirreled away together for a drink or a hand of cards. Hannah sighed as she flipped her fan open to cool her burning cheeks.

The memory of the kiss she and Ramsbury had shared remained fresh in her mind. The way her body had melted against his as they’d pressed their lips together. She’d had a deuced hard time falling asleep the last two nights and woke each day with a song in her heart and a craving for Ramsbury. What the devil had the man done to her?

Hannah had relived the liaison dozens of times since. Even now, she caught herself pressing her glove covered fingers to her lips. She’d actually been plotting a way to steal another kiss when the dratted letter arrived this afternoon. A fresh blackmail note reminding her that time was running short. As if she didn’t already know.

Hannah fought to keep the scowl from her face as Lord Wayfair approached. She hadn’t the time to spare on him for she desperately needed to speak with Ramsbury. All the same, she could not give him the cut direct. Certainly not at Narissa’s ball.

“You are a vision tonight.” Lord Wayfair bent over her hand and deposited a kiss to her knuckles.

“Good evening, my lord.” Hannah forced a smile before scanning the room for Ramsbury once more. She’d have to seek him out as soon as she freed herself from Lord Wayfair.

“May I claim the next dance?” Lord Wayfair asked.

Hannah swallowed back her protests and said, “Indeed.” She’d wanted to deny his request, but in doing so she would have sentenced herself to the sidelines, and she simply could not do that. After all, she may have to dance with Ramsbury in-order to talk with him. The idea of being held in his arms sent a fresh thrill through her.

Lord Wayfair swept her onto the parquet dance floor as the quartet struck the first cords of a waltz. Hannah tried not to cringe as he pulled her near and began leading her through the dance. Her reaction surprised her for not too long ago, she found the earl to be pleasant company. Not that she’d ever wished to be held by him, but she did enjoy spending time with him in the past.

“You seem a bit distracted, my lady.” He twirled her, then brought her back to him. “I am a good listener, should you like to talk.”

Hannah shook her head. “It’s nothing.” She averted her attention to the couples dancing nearby.

“Are you quite certain?” He narrowed his eyes in speculation. “Perhaps I could be of assistance.”

Assistance? What made him think she needed help? A trickle of foreboding ran through her. “I assure you, I am quite fine,” she said.

A flicker of annoyance passed through his gaze before he offered a smile.
